Local SEO Basics for Richmond Small Businesses
July 26, 2026
When someone in Richmond pulls out their phone and searches "coffee near me" or "roof repair in Midlothian," Google decides which businesses to show. Local SEO is simply the work of making sure your business is one of them. You do not need to be a technical expert to get the basics right.
Start with your Google Business Profile
If you do only one thing, do this. Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows up in Google Maps and in that box of local results at the top of the page. It is the single biggest lever you have.
- Claim and verify your profile, or create one if it does not exist.
- Fill out everything: categories, hours, phone number, website, service area, and a real description.
- Choose accurate categories - the primary one that best matches what you do, plus relevant secondary ones.
- Add real photos of your storefront, team, and work.
- Keep it current. Google favors active profiles.
A complete, active profile often does more for a local business than anything on the website itself.
Keep your name, address, and phone consistent
Write your business name, address, and phone number exactly the same way everywhere they appear: your website, your Google profile, Yelp, Facebook, and local directories. Even small differences, like "St." in one place and "Street" in another, can muddy the signal. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
Earn reviews, and respond to them
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether a customer picks you. Ask happy customers after a good job, and make it easy with a direct link. Never buy or fake them. Respond to all of them - thank people for good reviews, and reply calmly to critical ones.
Put local keywords on your site
Mention the neighborhoods and towns you actually serve - Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Short Pump, Glen Allen - in your page text, headings, and titles. Write it the way a person would say it, not stuffed and repeated.
Make sure your site is mobile-fast
Most local searches happen on phones. Check your own site on your phone: does it load quickly, is the text readable, is your phone number easy to tap, are your hours and location easy to find?
Be patient, and be consistent
Local SEO is not a switch you flip. It takes months of steady effort before you see meaningful movement, and there are no lasting shortcuts. The good news is that the basics compound. Start with your Google Business Profile this week, fix your name and address consistency next, and build a habit of asking for reviews. For a Richmond small business, that groundwork is most of the battle.
